An Evening with Dr. James D. Tabor – The Lost Mary

Tuesday November 4th, 6:30pm-8:30pm

Revered by millions as the mother of Christ, but rarely for her revolutionary role as the matriarch of the Jesus movement, renowned historian James D. Tabor lifts the veil on the life of Mary.

By providing substantial historical context about her life as a single mother of eight, Dr. Tabor argues in his newest release, The Lost Mary, there is more to Mary than paintings of her weeping at the foot of the cross.

Tabor’s evidence unfolds in five radical claims to provide a transformative perspective that propels Mary’s role from the womb that bore Jesus to the wellspring of his message, making her a model of resilience that speaks across time and the “first founder” of what we now call Christianity.

But — if Mary’s role was so central, why would the New Testament so often relegate her to the sidelines, forever just the ethereal subject of stained glass in cathedrals?

An American Biblical scholar and retired Professor of Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Dr. Tabor is a captivating speaker featured on PBS, BBC, and the Discovery Channel. He brings history to life with vivid images, maps, and stories from digs in Israel and beyond. James Cameron — creator of Avatar, Titanic, and The Terminator — recently praised Tabor’s work, stating that The Lost Mary is a “great leap forward in understanding and contextualizing Mary’s life, after two millennia of her being dismissed and rewritten by patriarchal power structures.”

Over the past three decades Dr. Tabor has combined his study of ancient texts with fieldwork in archaeology to correct the record and show that behind every moment are women whose voices have been silenced and that Mary is no exception.

Hosted by Scholar & Scribe Bookshop in partnership with The Peachtree City Library, Friends of the Library and media sponsor The Citizen, join us for a rich and educational discussion moderated by the Peachtree City Library Services Director, Jill Prouty.
