SUMMARY:Christian Fiction Book Club: Firefly Diaries
DESCRIPTION:Our Christian fiction selection for December is Firefly Diaries by C.C. Warrens. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\n“The world whipped around her in a dizzying funnel of lights and shouts\, people in uniforms pressing in from all directions. Noelle sat motionless in the street\, barely able to breathe. His little body was too still. Too broken.” \n\n\n\nNoelle’s world shattered that night\, like the pieces of headlights scattered across the dark street. There was no rebuilding her life around the grave of her child. \n\n\n\nAdrift in her grief\, Noelle finds herself drawn to an old house as rundown and weary as her spirit. She might not be able to mend her own brokenness\, but maybe she can restore this abandoned structure to its former beauty. Determined\, she throws herself into a renovation project with the unexpected help of a local. But she soon learns that her new home comes with a blood-stained history and a chilling reputation. \n\n\n\nWhen she stumbles across a diary written by a child with a disturbing life\, and a teenage girl vanishes from the village\, clues leave Noelle wondering if her house might somehow be connected. Someone — or something — wants her gone\, but she has no intention of leaving without discovering the truth. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. We look forward to seeing you there! \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nJoin the Club!

SUMMARY:Author Event: Lisa James
DESCRIPTION:About the Author\n\n\n\nLisa James is a Northern native living in the South\, a poet and author\, devoted mother\, and survivor whose journey shapes her work. She is a millennial small business owner and PMI-certified business consultant passionate about youth development\, social advocacy\, and creating meaningful impact through purpose-driven leadership. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nAt the start of a worldwide pandemic; a tragic car accident changed my life forever. This is the story of how God’s grace brought me through survivor’s guilt\, spinal surgery\, and divorce during unprecedented chaos. While I struggled to cope with the passing of the other driver; I fought to keep my dignity\, faith\, and strength intact. The trauma of unsaid accusations and investigations was a source of daily pain and fear. I didn’t feel like I had the right to complain because I had walked away with my life. The first surgery of my life took place on election day in 2020. With all the threats of violence and political division\, there could not have been a scarier time to close my eyes to the world and trust that I would wake back up. \n\n\n\nBefore and after the surgery; I had tremendous doubts about my physical healing. God’s grace sustained my mental well-being\, which resulted in overall healing. As I struggled to complete a graduates degree and home school teenage twins; my oldest child became a mother. There was nothing ordinary about my first grandchild’s birth. In fact\, a lot went wrong while I sat patiently on the sidelines begging God to “tag me in”. \n\n\n\nAs I learned to trust HIM more and more\, I found solace in HIS grace. I found hidden treasures in peaceful places. This story is for the person that seemingly lost everything and everyone\, all at once. Only; they held on long enough to experience GOD’s grace. Each morning that they GOD up\, and put one foot in front of the other\, they saw more and more to be thankful for. They never ever gave up. Even when it hurt so bad\, they would question what it actually meant to be a survivor. \n\n\n\nThis story is about understanding and receiving GOD’s grace. It’s about its perfect timing. It’s about letting go and letting GOD. It’s about leaning not on your own understanding. This story is therapy and GOD’s way of letting me feel what I needed to feel\, in order to close those gaping wounds. I’ve never cried so deeply or felt such gripping fear. I’ve also never felt such joy and restoration. \n\n\n\nThis is not a religious book; it’s about faith. It’s about a knowing that only GOD’s child can cultivate and receive. This story starts out being about a failure to yield but ends with love that knows no bounds.

SUMMARY:Fantasy Book Club: The Spear Cuts Through Water
DESCRIPTION:Our fantasy selection for January is The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nTwo warriors shepherd an ancient god across a broken land to end the tyrannical reign of a royal family in this epic fantasy from the author of The Vanished Birds. \n\n\n\nThe people suffer under the centuries-long rule of the Moon Throne. The royal family—the despotic emperor and his monstrous sons\, the Three Terrors—hold the countryside in their choking grip. They bleed the land and oppress the citizens with the frightful powers they inherited from the god locked under their palace. \n\n\n\nBut that god cannot be contained forever. \n\n\n\nWith the aid of Jun\, a guard broken by his guilt-stricken past\, and Keema\, an outcast fighting for his future\, the god escapes from her royal captivity and flees from her own children\, the triplet Terrors who would drag her back to her unholy prison. And so it is that she embarks with her young companions on a five-day pilgrimage in search of freedom—and a way to end the Moon Throne forever. The journey ahead will be more dangerous than any of them could have imagined. \n\n\n\nBoth a sweeping adventure story and an intimate exploration of identity\, legacy\, and belonging\, The Spear Cuts Through Water is an ambitious and profound saga that will transport and transform you—and is like nothing you’ve ever read before. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. SUMMARY:Mystery Book Club: Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers
DESCRIPTION:Our mystery selection for January is Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nA lonely shopkeeper takes it upon herself to solve a murder in the most peculiar way in this captivating mystery by Jesse Q. Sutanto\, bestselling author of Dial A for Aunties. \n\n\n\nVera Wong is a lonely little old lady—ah\, lady of a certain age—who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite living alone\, Vera is not needy\, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to. \n\n\n\nThen one morning\, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing—a dead man in the middle of her tea shop. In his outstretched hand\, a flash drive. Vera doesn’t know what comes over her\, but after calling the cops like any good citizen would\, she sort of . . . swipes the flash drive from the body and tucks it safely into the pocket of her apron. Why? Because Vera is sure she would do a better job than the police possibly could\, because nobody sniffs out a wrongdoing quite like a suspicious Chinese mother with time on her hands. Vera knows the killer will be back for the flash drive; all she has to do is watch the increasing number of customers at her shop and figure out which one among them is the killer. \n\n\n\nWhat Vera does not expect is to form friendships with her customers and start to care for each and every one of them. As a protective mother hen\, will she end up having to give one of her newfound chicks to the police? \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. We look forward to seeing you there! \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nIf you purchase the audiobook through Libro.fm\, send your receipt to hello@scholarandscribe.com to be added to the club. By keeping herself from the sea\, Imogen’s bloodlust is dulled\, and her black wings remain concealed beneath her skin. \n\n\n\nWhen a neighboring king comes to visit\, Imogen can no longer hide. He knows precisely what she is\, and he believes she can save their kingdoms from an even greater monster. But Imogen’s power threatens to violently reveal itself\, and the two form a blood bond that protects them both. They flee together\, traversing waters teeming with the undead. As the lines between duty to their people and desire for each other begin to blur\, Imogen worries her ancestral powers may not be enough to kill what hunts her–the only way to defeat a monster may be to become one herself. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. SUMMARY:Fiction Book Club: Cursed Daughters
DESCRIPTION:Our fiction selection for January is Cursed Daughters by Oyinkan Braithwaite. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\n“A triumph: bold\, searing\, and utterly original. From the first page\, it grips with an electric pulse….Impossible to put down.”—Abi Daré\, New York Times bestselling author of Girl with the Louding Voice \n\n\n\nWhen Ebun gives birth to her daughter\, Eniiyi\, on the day they bury her cousin Monife\, there is no denying the startling resemblance between the child and the dead woman. So begins the belief\, fostered and fanned by the entire family\, that Eniiyi is the actual reincarnation of Monife\, fated to follow in her footsteps in all ways\, including that tragic end. \n\n\n\nThere is also the matter of the family curse: “No man will call your house his home. And if they try\, they will not have peace…” which has been handed down from generation to generation\, breaking hearts and causing three generations of abandoned Falodun women to live under the same roof.  \n\n\n\nWhen Eniiyi falls in love with the handsome boy she saves from drowning\, she can no longer run from her family’s history. As several women in her family have done before\, she ill-advisedly seeks answers in older\, darker spiritual corners of Lagos\, demanding solutions. Is she destined to live out the habitual story of love and heartbreak? Or can she break the pattern once and for all\, not only avoiding the spiral that led Monife to her lonely death\, but liberating herself from all the family secrets and unspoken traumas that have dogged her steps since before she could remember? \n\n\n\nCursed Daughters is a brilliant cocktail of modernity and superstition\, vibrant humor and hard-won wisdom\, romantic love and familial obligation. With its unforgettable cast of characters\, it asks us what it means to be given a second chance and how to live both wisely and well with what we’ve been given.
