SUMMARY:Memoir Book Club: Men We Reaped
DESCRIPTION:Our memoir selection for December is Men We Reaped by Jesmyn Ward. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\n“We saw the lightning and that was the guns; and then we heard the thunder and that was the big guns; and then we heard the rain falling and that was the blood falling; and when we came to get in the crops\, it was dead men that we reaped.” -Harriet Tubman \n\n\n\nIn five years\, Jesmyn Ward lost five young men in her life-to drugs\, accidents\, suicide\, and the bad luck that can follow people who live in poverty\, particularly black men. Dealing with these losses\, one after another\, made Jesmyn ask the question: Why? And as she began to write about the experience of living through all the dying\, she realized the truth-and it took her breath away. Her brother and her friends all died because of who they were and where they were from\, because they lived with a history of racism and economic struggle that fostered drug addiction and the dissolution of family and relationships. Jesmyn says the answer was so obvious she felt stupid for not seeing it. But it nagged at her until she knew she had to write about her community\, to write their stories and her own. \n\n\n\nJesmyn grew up in poverty in rural Mississippi. She writes powerfully about the pressures this brings\, on the men who can do no right and the women who stand in for family in a society where the men are often absent. She bravely tells her story\, revisiting the agonizing losses of her only brother and her friends. As the sole member of her family to leave home and pursue higher education\, she writes about this parallel American universe with the objectivity distance provides and the intimacy of utter familiarity. A brutal world rendered beautifully\, Jesmyn Ward’s memoir will sit comfortably alongside Edwidge Danticat’s Brother\, I’m Dying\, Tobias Wolff’s This Boy’s Life\, and Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. We look forward to seeing you there! \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nIf you purchase the audiobook through Libro.fm\, send your receipt to hello@scholarandscribe.com to be added to the club. SUMMARY:Romance Book Club: The Plight Before Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Our romance selection for December is The Plight Before Christmas by Kate Stewart. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nThe Plight Before Christmas is a full length\, second chance\, Christmas themed romance and most definitely on SANTA’S NAUGHTY LIST! \n\n\n\nClark Griswold was onto something\, at least with his annual holiday meltdown. And since the last three weeks of my life have been riddled with humbug-another breakup\, a broken toe\, an office promotion I deserved and didn’t get-I’m not at all in the mood to celebrate nor have the happ\, happ\, happiest Christmas EVER. \n\n\n\nWhen Mom insisted that we all gather at my Grandparent’s ancient cabin for an old school family Christmas\, I fully intended to get into the holiday spirit with the help of the three wise men\, Johnnie Walker\, Jack Daniels\, and Jim Beam. But those boys did absolutely nothing to offset the shock or temper the sting of seeing my EX on our doorstep the first day of our holiday soiree. \n\n\n\nApparently\, Santa missed the memo\, and this elf is pissed. \n\n\n\nStuck for a week with the man who obliterated my heart nearly two decades ago\, I did the only thing I could do and put on my game face\, thankful for the home advantage. \n\n\n\nI knew better than to drink that last cup of eggnog. \n\n\n\nI knew better than to get tongue tangled beneath the mistletoe with the only man to ever break my heart. \n\n\n\nI knew better than to sleep with Satan’s wingman on the eve of the Lord’s birthday. \n\n\n\nI could blame the nog. I could blame the deceitful light blue eyes\, thick\, angelic hair\, and panty evaporating smirk…but mostly\, I blame Eli because he always knew exactly which of my buttons to push. \n\n\n\nI foolishly thought a family Christmas filled with nostalgia was going to turn my inner Scrooge around\, but this year’s festivities went up in flames. Leave it to the ghost of my Christmas past to be the one to light the match. \n\n\n\nFa la la la la\, la FML. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. We look forward to seeing you there! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nJoin the Club!

SUMMARY:Fiction Book Club: Amity
DESCRIPTION:Our fiction selection for December is Amity by Nathan Harris. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nFrom the New York Times bestselling author of The Sweetness of Water comes a gripping story about a brother and sister\, emancipated from slavery but still searching for true freedom\, and their odyssey across the deserts of Mexico to escape a former master still intent on their bondage. \n\n\n\nNew Orleans\, 1866. The Civil War might be over\, but formerly enslaved Coleman and June have yet to find the freedom they’ve been promised. Two years ago\, the siblings were separated when their old master\, Mr. Harper\, took June away to Mexico\, where he hoped to escape the new reality of the postbellum South. Coleman stayed behind in Louisiana to serve the Harper family\, clinging to the hope that one day June would return. \n\n\n\nWhen an unexpected letter from Mr. Harper arrives\, summoning Coleman to Mexico\, Coleman thinks that finally his prayers have been answered. What Coleman cannot know is the tangled truth of June’s tribulations under Mr. Harper out on the frontier. And when disaster strikes Coleman’s journey\, he is forced on the run with Mr. Harper’s daughter\, Florence. Together\, they venture into the Mexican desert to find June\, all the while evading two crooked brothers who’ll stop at nothing to capture Coleman and Florence and collect the money they’re owed. As Coleman and June separately navigate a perilous\, parched landscape\, the siblings learn quickly that freedom isn’t always given–sometimes\, it must be taken by force. \n\n\n\nAs in his New York Times bestselling debut The Sweetness of Water\, Nathan Harris delves into the critical years of the Civil War’s aftermath to deliver an intimate and epic tale of what freedom means in a society still determined to return its Black citizens to bondage. Populated with unforgettable characters\, Amity is a vital addition to the literature of emancipation.
