SUMMARY:Memoir Book Club: Men We Reaped
DESCRIPTION:Our memoir selection for December is Men We Reaped by Jesmyn Ward. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\n“We saw the lightning and that was the guns; and then we heard the thunder and that was the big guns; and then we heard the rain falling and that was the blood falling; and when we came to get in the crops\, it was dead men that we reaped.” -Harriet Tubman \n\n\n\nIn five years\, Jesmyn Ward lost five young men in her life-to drugs\, accidents\, suicide\, and the bad luck that can follow people who live in poverty\, particularly black men. Dealing with these losses\, one after another\, made Jesmyn ask the question: Why? And as she began to write about the experience of living through all the dying\, she realized the truth-and it took her breath away. Her brother and her friends all died because of who they were and where they were from\, because they lived with a history of racism and economic struggle that fostered drug addiction and the dissolution of family and relationships. Jesmyn says the answer was so obvious she felt stupid for not seeing it. But it nagged at her until she knew she had to write about her community\, to write their stories and her own. \n\n\n\nJesmyn grew up in poverty in rural Mississippi. She writes powerfully about the pressures this brings\, on the men who can do no right and the women who stand in for family in a society where the men are often absent. She bravely tells her story\, revisiting the agonizing losses of her only brother and her friends. As the sole member of her family to leave home and pursue higher education\, she writes about this parallel American universe with the objectivity distance provides and the intimacy of utter familiarity. A brutal world rendered beautifully\, Jesmyn Ward’s memoir will sit comfortably alongside Edwidge Danticat’s Brother\, I’m Dying\, Tobias Wolff’s This Boy’s Life\, and Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. We look forward to seeing you there! \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nIf you purchase the audiobook through Libro.fm\, send your receipt to hello@scholarandscribe.com to be added to the club. SUMMARY:Romance Book Club: The Plight Before Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Our romance selection for December is The Plight Before Christmas by Kate Stewart. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nThe Plight Before Christmas is a full length\, second chance\, Christmas themed romance and most definitely on SANTA’S NAUGHTY LIST! \n\n\n\nClark Griswold was onto something\, at least with his annual holiday meltdown. And since the last three weeks of my life have been riddled with humbug-another breakup\, a broken toe\, an office promotion I deserved and didn’t get-I’m not at all in the mood to celebrate nor have the happ\, happ\, happiest Christmas EVER. \n\n\n\nWhen Mom insisted that we all gather at my Grandparent’s ancient cabin for an old school family Christmas\, I fully intended to get into the holiday spirit with the help of the three wise men\, Johnnie Walker\, Jack Daniels\, and Jim Beam. But those boys did absolutely nothing to offset the shock or temper the sting of seeing my EX on our doorstep the first day of our holiday soiree. \n\n\n\nApparently\, Santa missed the memo\, and this elf is pissed. \n\n\n\nStuck for a week with the man who obliterated my heart nearly two decades ago\, I did the only thing I could do and put on my game face\, thankful for the home advantage. \n\n\n\nI knew better than to drink that last cup of eggnog. \n\n\n\nI knew better than to get tongue tangled beneath the mistletoe with the only man to ever break my heart. \n\n\n\nI knew better than to sleep with Satan’s wingman on the eve of the Lord’s birthday. \n\n\n\nI could blame the nog. I could blame the deceitful light blue eyes\, thick\, angelic hair\, and panty evaporating smirk…but mostly\, I blame Eli because he always knew exactly which of my buttons to push. \n\n\n\nI foolishly thought a family Christmas filled with nostalgia was going to turn my inner Scrooge around\, but this year’s festivities went up in flames. Leave it to the ghost of my Christmas past to be the one to light the match. \n\n\n\nFa la la la la\, la FML. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. We look forward to seeing you there! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nJoin the Club!

SUMMARY:Fiction Book Club: Amity
DESCRIPTION:Our fiction selection for December is Amity by Nathan Harris. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nFrom the New York Times bestselling author of The Sweetness of Water comes a gripping story about a brother and sister\, emancipated from slavery but still searching for true freedom\, and their odyssey across the deserts of Mexico to escape a former master still intent on their bondage. \n\n\n\nNew Orleans\, 1866. The Civil War might be over\, but formerly enslaved Coleman and June have yet to find the freedom they’ve been promised. Two years ago\, the siblings were separated when their old master\, Mr. Harper\, took June away to Mexico\, where he hoped to escape the new reality of the postbellum South. Coleman stayed behind in Louisiana to serve the Harper family\, clinging to the hope that one day June would return. \n\n\n\nWhen an unexpected letter from Mr. Harper arrives\, summoning Coleman to Mexico\, Coleman thinks that finally his prayers have been answered. What Coleman cannot know is the tangled truth of June’s tribulations under Mr. Harper out on the frontier. And when disaster strikes Coleman’s journey\, he is forced on the run with Mr. Harper’s daughter\, Florence. Together\, they venture into the Mexican desert to find June\, all the while evading two crooked brothers who’ll stop at nothing to capture Coleman and Florence and collect the money they’re owed. As Coleman and June separately navigate a perilous\, parched landscape\, the siblings learn quickly that freedom isn’t always given–sometimes\, it must be taken by force. \n\n\n\nAs in his New York Times bestselling debut The Sweetness of Water\, Nathan Harris delves into the critical years of the Civil War’s aftermath to deliver an intimate and epic tale of what freedom means in a society still determined to return its Black citizens to bondage. Populated with unforgettable characters\, Amity is a vital addition to the literature of emancipation. SUMMARY:Author Event: Lisa James
DESCRIPTION:About the Author\n\n\n\nLisa James is a Northern native living in the South\, a poet and author\, devoted mother\, and survivor whose journey shapes her work. She is a millennial small business owner and PMI-certified business consultant passionate about youth development\, social advocacy\, and creating meaningful impact through purpose-driven leadership. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nAt the start of a worldwide pandemic; a tragic car accident changed my life forever. This is the story of how God’s grace brought me through survivor’s guilt\, spinal surgery\, and divorce during unprecedented chaos. While I struggled to cope with the passing of the other driver; I fought to keep my dignity\, faith\, and strength intact. The trauma of unsaid accusations and investigations was a source of daily pain and fear. I didn’t feel like I had the right to complain because I had walked away with my life. The first surgery of my life took place on election day in 2020. With all the threats of violence and political division\, there could not have been a scarier time to close my eyes to the world and trust that I would wake back up. \n\n\n\nBefore and after the surgery; I had tremendous doubts about my physical healing. God’s grace sustained my mental well-being\, which resulted in overall healing. As I struggled to complete a graduates degree and home school teenage twins; my oldest child became a mother. There was nothing ordinary about my first grandchild’s birth. In fact\, a lot went wrong while I sat patiently on the sidelines begging God to “tag me in”. \n\n\n\nAs I learned to trust HIM more and more\, I found solace in HIS grace. I found hidden treasures in peaceful places. This story is for the person that seemingly lost everything and everyone\, all at once. Only; they held on long enough to experience GOD’s grace. Each morning that they GOD up\, and put one foot in front of the other\, they saw more and more to be thankful for. They never ever gave up. Even when it hurt so bad\, they would question what it actually meant to be a survivor. \n\n\n\nThis story is about understanding and receiving GOD’s grace. It’s about its perfect timing. It’s about letting go and letting GOD. It’s about leaning not on your own understanding. This story is therapy and GOD’s way of letting me feel what I needed to feel\, in order to close those gaping wounds. I’ve never cried so deeply or felt such gripping fear. I’ve also never felt such joy and restoration. \n\n\n\nThis is not a religious book; it’s about faith. It’s about a knowing that only GOD’s child can cultivate and receive. This story starts out being about a failure to yield but ends with love that knows no bounds.

SUMMARY:Fantasy Book Club: The Spear Cuts Through Water
DESCRIPTION:Our fantasy selection for January is The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nTwo warriors shepherd an ancient god across a broken land to end the tyrannical reign of a royal family in this epic fantasy from the author of The Vanished Birds. \n\n\n\nThe people suffer under the centuries-long rule of the Moon Throne. The royal family—the despotic emperor and his monstrous sons\, the Three Terrors—hold the countryside in their choking grip. They bleed the land and oppress the citizens with the frightful powers they inherited from the god locked under their palace. \n\n\n\nBut that god cannot be contained forever. \n\n\n\nWith the aid of Jun\, a guard broken by his guilt-stricken past\, and Keema\, an outcast fighting for his future\, the god escapes from her royal captivity and flees from her own children\, the triplet Terrors who would drag her back to her unholy prison. And so it is that she embarks with her young companions on a five-day pilgrimage in search of freedom—and a way to end the Moon Throne forever. The journey ahead will be more dangerous than any of them could have imagined. \n\n\n\nBoth a sweeping adventure story and an intimate exploration of identity\, legacy\, and belonging\, The Spear Cuts Through Water is an ambitious and profound saga that will transport and transform you—and is like nothing you’ve ever read before. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. SUMMARY:Mystery Book Club: Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers
DESCRIPTION:Our mystery selection for January is Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nA lonely shopkeeper takes it upon herself to solve a murder in the most peculiar way in this captivating mystery by Jesse Q. Sutanto\, bestselling author of Dial A for Aunties. \n\n\n\nVera Wong is a lonely little old lady—ah\, lady of a certain age—who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite living alone\, Vera is not needy\, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to. \n\n\n\nThen one morning\, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing—a dead man in the middle of her tea shop. In his outstretched hand\, a flash drive. Vera doesn’t know what comes over her\, but after calling the cops like any good citizen would\, she sort of . . . swipes the flash drive from the body and tucks it safely into the pocket of her apron. Why? Because Vera is sure she would do a better job than the police possibly could\, because nobody sniffs out a wrongdoing quite like a suspicious Chinese mother with time on her hands. Vera knows the killer will be back for the flash drive; all she has to do is watch the increasing number of customers at her shop and figure out which one among them is the killer. \n\n\n\nWhat Vera does not expect is to form friendships with her customers and start to care for each and every one of them. As a protective mother hen\, will she end up having to give one of her newfound chicks to the police? \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nThe monster is always slain … \n\n\n\nImogen Nel is in hiding. Hiding from a cruel kingdom that believes Sirens are monstrous\, blood-hungry creatures. Hiding from a king and his captain who viciously hunt her kind. Hiding from her own alluring abilities. By keeping herself from the sea\, Imogen’s bloodlust is dulled\, and her black wings remain concealed beneath her skin. \n\n\n\nWhen a neighboring king comes to visit\, Imogen can no longer hide. He knows precisely what she is\, and he believes she can save their kingdoms from an even greater monster. But Imogen’s power threatens to violently reveal itself\, and the two form a blood bond that protects them both. They flee together\, traversing waters teeming with the undead. As the lines between duty to their people and desire for each other begin to blur\, Imogen worries her ancestral powers may not be enough to kill what hunts her–the only way to defeat a monster may be to become one herself. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. SUMMARY:Fiction Book Club: Cursed Daughters
DESCRIPTION:Our fiction selection for January is Cursed Daughters by Oyinkan Braithwaite. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\n“A triumph: bold\, searing\, and utterly original. From the first page\, it grips with an electric pulse….Impossible to put down.”—Abi Daré\, New York Times bestselling author of Girl with the Louding Voice \n\n\n\nWhen Ebun gives birth to her daughter\, Eniiyi\, on the day they bury her cousin Monife\, there is no denying the startling resemblance between the child and the dead woman. So begins the belief\, fostered and fanned by the entire family\, that Eniiyi is the actual reincarnation of Monife\, fated to follow in her footsteps in all ways\, including that tragic end. \n\n\n\nThere is also the matter of the family curse: “No man will call your house his home. And if they try\, they will not have peace…” which has been handed down from generation to generation\, breaking hearts and causing three generations of abandoned Falodun women to live under the same roof.  \n\n\n\nWhen Eniiyi falls in love with the handsome boy she saves from drowning\, she can no longer run from her family’s history. As several women in her family have done before\, she ill-advisedly seeks answers in older\, darker spiritual corners of Lagos\, demanding solutions. Is she destined to live out the habitual story of love and heartbreak? Or can she break the pattern once and for all\, not only avoiding the spiral that led Monife to her lonely death\, but liberating herself from all the family secrets and unspoken traumas that have dogged her steps since before she could remember? \n\n\n\nCursed Daughters is a brilliant cocktail of modernity and superstition\, vibrant humor and hard-won wisdom\, romantic love and familial obligation. With its unforgettable cast of characters\, it asks us what it means to be given a second chance and how to live both wisely and well with what we’ve been given. SUMMARY:Christian Fiction Book Club: The Masterpiece
DESCRIPTION:Our Christian fiction selection for February is The Masterpiece by Francine Rivers. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nThe New York Times bestselling author of Redeeming Love returns to her romance roots with this unexpected and redemptive love story\, a probing tale with spiritual depth that reminds us that mercy can shape even the most broken among us into an imperfect yet stunning masterpiece. \n\n\n\nA successful LA artist\, Roman Velasco appears to have everything he could possibly want―money\, women\, fame. Only Grace Moore\, his reluctant\, newly hired personal assistant\, knows how little he truly has. The demons of Roman’s past seem to echo through the halls of his empty mansion and out across his breathtaking Topanga Canyon view. But Grace doesn’t know how her boss secretly wrestles with those demons: by tagging buildings as the Bird\, a notorious but unidentified graffiti artist―an alter ego that could destroy his career and land him in prison. \n\n\n\nLike Roman\, Grace is wrestling with ghosts and secrets of her own. After a disastrous marriage threw her life completely off course\, she vowed never to let love steal her dreams again. But as she gets to know the enigmatic man behind the reputation\, it’s as if the jagged pieces of both of their pasts slowly begin to fit together . . . until something so unexpected happens that it changes the course of their relationship―and both their lives―forever. SUMMARY:Author Event: Jessica Meek
DESCRIPTION:About the book\n\n\n\nI am Reaper born. The land knows my hands.Once\, I sowed life into the curse. Now the earth turns away.Kayin was made to seed\, to tend\, to bring good from ruin. But when love and loss test her devotion\, Kayin commits an unthinkable act that mangles her calling and severs her from the Fire that once guided her.Banished and cursed\, she walks the barren world that once bloomed beneath her care. Beasts hunt her. Fire hides its face. Still\, she walks—seeking a way home\, or a way to end the hunger within.A reimagining of the Cain and Abel myth\, Kayin and Abel is a work of mythic fantasy told in fractured\, poetic prose—an ancient story retold through the voice of the first exile\, where every word bears the weight of dust\, guilt\, and grace.
