SUMMARY:Christian Fiction Book Club: Under the Magnolias
DESCRIPTION:Our Christian fiction selection for November is Under the Magnolias by T.I. Lowe. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nThis night not only marked the end to the drought\, but also the end to the long-held secret we’d kept hidden under the magnolias. \n\n\n\nMagnolia\, South Carolina\, 1980 \n\n\n\nAustin Foster is barely a teenager when her mama dies giving birth to twins\, leaving her to pick up the pieces while holding her six siblings together and doing her best to stop her daddy from retreating into his personal darkness. \n\n\n\nScratching out a living on the family’s tobacco farm is as tough as it gets. When a few random acts of kindness help to ease the Fosters’ hardships\, Austin finds herself relying upon some of Magnolia’s most colorful citizens for friendship and more. But it’s next to impossible to hide the truth about the goings-on at Nolia Farms\, and Austin’s desperate attempts to save face all but break her. \n\n\n\nJust when it seems she might have something more waiting for her―with the son of a wealthy local family who she’s crushed on for years―her father makes a choice that will crack wide-open the family’s secrets and lead to a public reckoning. There are consequences for loving a boy like Vance Cumberland\, but there is also freedom in the truth. \n\n\n\nWeaving together themes of hope\, grief\, mental health\, and faith into a beautiful and moving novel\, Under the Magnolias features: \n\n\n\n\nClean Christian romance\n\n\n\nA resilient Southern heroine\n\n\n\nDiscussion questions for book clubs\n\n\n\nA playlist inspired by the book\n\n\n\n\nT. I. Lowe’s gritty yet tender and uplifting coming-of-age tale reminds us that a great story can break your heart . . . then heal it in the best possible way. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. We look forward to seeing you there! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nJoin the Club!

SUMMARY:Author Event: Dr. James D. Tabor
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Dr. James D. Tabor – The Lost Mary \n\n\n\nTuesday November 4th\, 6:30pm-8:30pm \n\n\n\nRevered by millions as the mother of Christ\, but rarely for her revolutionary role as the matriarch of the Jesus movement\, renowned historian James D. Tabor lifts the veil on the life of Mary. \n\n\n\nBy providing substantial historical context about her life as a single mother of eight\, Dr. Tabor argues in his newest release\, The Lost Mary\, there is more to Mary than paintings of her weeping at the foot of the cross. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick here to buy ticketsSell tickets online with Ticket Tailor \n\n\n\n\n\nTabor’s evidence unfolds in five radical claims to provide a transformative perspective that propels Mary’s role from the womb that bore Jesus to the wellspring of his message\, making her a model of resilience that speaks across time and the “first founder” of what we now call Christianity. \n\n\n\nBut — if Mary’s role was so central\, why would the New Testament so often relegate her to the sidelines\, forever just the ethereal subject of stained glass in cathedrals? \n\n\n\nAn American Biblical scholar and retired Professor of Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte\, Dr. Tabor is a captivating speaker featured on PBS\, BBC\, and the Discovery Channel. He brings history to life with vivid images\, maps\, and stories from digs in Israel and beyond. James Cameron — creator of Avatar\, Titanic\, and The Terminator — recently praised Tabor’s work\, stating that The Lost Mary is a “great leap forward in understanding and contextualizing Mary’s life\, after two millennia of her being dismissed and rewritten by patriarchal power structures.” \n\n\n\nOver the past three decades Dr. Tabor has combined his study of ancient texts with fieldwork in archaeology to correct the record and show that behind every moment are women whose voices have been silenced and that Mary is no exception. \n\n\n\nHosted by Scholar & Scribe Bookshop in partnership with The Peachtree City Library\, Friends of the Library and media sponsor The Citizen\, join us for a rich and educational discussion moderated by the Peachtree City Library Services Director\, Jill Prouty. \n\n\n\nVIP Ticket ExperienceElevate your evening with our VIP ticket\, which includes priority seating\, a curated selection of heavy hors d’oeuvres from Enzo and light refreshments. VIP Guests will also enjoy an exclusive meet & greet with Dr. James D. Tabor and a personalized book signing. VIP spots are limited and available on a first-come basis. \n\n\n\nThis event will be at The Shipyard at Town at Trilith on Tuesday\, November 4\, 6:30-8:30. SUMMARY:Author Event: Kenja McCray
DESCRIPTION:About the Author\n\n\n\nKenja McCray is Assistant Professor of History in the Department of Humanities at Clayton State University and coauthor of Atlanta Metropolitan State College\, a campus history. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nA new perspective on women’s Black Power leadership legacies \n\n\n\nAcademics and popular commentors have expressed common sentiments about the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s-that it was male dominated and overrun with autocratic leaders. Yet women’s strategizing\, management\, and sustained work were integral to movement organizations’ functioning\, and female advocates of cultural nationalism often exhibited a unique service-oriented\, collaborative leadership style. \n\n\n\nEssential Soldiers documents a variety of women Pan-African nationalists’ experiences\, considering the ways they produced a distinctive kind of leadership through their devotion and service to the struggle for freedom and equality. Relying on oral histories\, textual archival material\, and scholarly literature\, this book delves into women’s organizing and resistance efforts\, investigating how they challenged the one-dimensional notions of gender roles within cultural nationalist organizations. Revealing a form of Black Power leadership that has never been highlighted\, Kenja McCray explores how women articulated and used their power to transform themselves and their environments. Through her examination\, McCray argues that women’s Pan-Africanist cultural nationalist activism embodied a work-centered\, people-centered\, and African-centered form of service leadership. A dynamic and fascinating narrative of African American women activists\, Essential Soldiers provides a new vantage point for considering Black Power leadership legacies.

SUMMARY:Poetry Book Club: Postcolonial Love Poem
DESCRIPTION:Our poetry selection for November is Postcolonial Love Poem by Natalie Diaz. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nWINNER OF THE 2021 PULITZER PRIZE IN POETRY \n\n\n\nPostcolonial Love Poem is an anthem of desire against erasure. Natalie Diaz’s brilliant second collection demands that every body carried in its pages—bodies of language\, land\, rivers\, suffering brothers\, enemies\, and lovers—be touched and held as beloveds. Through these poems\, the wounds inflicted by America onto an indigenous people are allowed to bloom pleasure and tenderness: “Let me call my anxiety\, desire\, then. / Let me call it\, a garden.” In this new lyrical landscape\, the bodies of indigenous\, Latinx\, black\, and brown women are simultaneously the body politic and the body ecstatic. In claiming this autonomy of desire\, language is pushed to its dark edges\, the astonishing dunefields and forests where pleasure and love are both grief and joy\, violence and sensuality. \n\n\n\nDiaz defies the conditions from which she writes\, a nation whose creation predicated the diminishment and ultimate erasure of bodies like hers and the people she loves: “I am doing my best to not become a museum / of myself. I am doing my best to breathe in and out. // I am begging: Let me be lonely but not invisible.” Postcolonial Love Poem unravels notions of American goodness and creates something more powerful than hope—in it\, a future is built\, future being a matrix of the choices we make now\, and in these poems\, Diaz chooses love. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. We look forward to seeing you there! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nIf you purchase the audiobook through Libro.fm\, send your receipt to hello@scholarandscribe.com to be added to the club. SUMMARY:Fiction Book Club: To the Moon and Back
DESCRIPTION:Our fiction selection for November is To the Moon and Back by Eliana Ramage. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nIn this dazzlingly powerful story of family\, ambition and belonging\, one young woman’s obsessive quest to become the first Cherokee astronaut irrevocably alters the fates of the people she loves most. \n\n\n\nSteph Harper is on the run. She has been all her life\, ever since her mother drove five-year-old Steph and her younger sister through the night to Cherokee Nation\, a place they had never been\, but where she hoped they might finally belong. In response to the turmoil\, Steph sets her sights as far away from Oklahoma as she can get\, vowing that she will let nothing get in the way of pursuing the rigorous physical and academic training she knows she will need to be accepted by NASA\, and ultimately\, to go to the moon. \n\n\n\nSpanning three decades and several continents\, To the Moon and Back encompasses Steph’s turbulent journey\, along with the multifaceted and intertwined lives of the three women closest to her: her sister Kayla\, an artist who goes on to become an Indigenous social media influencer\, and whose determination to appear good takes her life to unexpected places; Steph’s college girlfriend Della Owens\, who strives to reclaim her identity as an adult after being removed from her Cherokee family through a challenge to the Indian Child Welfare Act; and Hannah\, Steph and Kayla’s mother\, who has held up her family’s tribal history as a beacon of inspiration to her children\, all the while keeping her own past a secret. \n\n\n\nIn Steph’s certainty that only her ambition can save her\, she will stretch her bonds with each of these women to the point of breaking\, at once betraying their love and generosity\, and forcing them to reconsider their own deepest desires in her shadow. Told through an intricately woven tapestry of narrative\, To the Moon and Back is an astounding and expansive novel of mothers and daughters\, love and sacrifice\, alienation and heartbreak\, terror and wonder. At its core\, it is the story of the extraordinary lengths to which one woman will go to find space for herself. SUMMARY:Mystery Book Club: The Missing Half
DESCRIPTION:Our mystery selection for November is The Missing Half by Ashley Flowers. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Two women haunted by their sisters’ unsolved disappearances band together in this captivating mystery from the author of All Good People Here and host of the #1 true crime podcast Crime Junkie. \n\n\n\nNicole “Nic” Monroe is in a rut. At twenty-four\, she lives alone in a dinky apartment in her hometown of Mishawaka\, Indiana\, she’s just gotten a DWI\, and she works the same dead-end job she’s been working since high school\, a job she only has because her boss is a family friend and feels sorry for her. Everyone has felt sorry for her for the last seven years—since the day her older sister\, Kasey\, vanished without a trace. \n\n\n\nOn the night Kasey went missing\, her car was found over a hundred miles from home. The driver’s door was open and her purse was untouched in the seat next to it. The only real clue in her disappearance was Jules Connor\, another young woman from the same area who disappeared in the same way\, two weeks earlier. But with so little for the police to go on\, both cases eventually went cold. \n\n\n\nNic wants nothing more than to move on from her sister’s disappearance and the state it’s left her in. But then one day\, Jules’s sister\, Jenna Connor\, walks into Nic’s life and offers her something she hasn’t felt in a long time: hope. What follows is a gripping tale of two sisters who will do anything to find their missing halves\, even if it means destroying everything they’ve ever known. SUMMARY:Memoir Book Club: Men We Reaped
DESCRIPTION:Our memoir selection for December is Men We Reaped by Jesmyn Ward. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\n“We saw the lightning and that was the guns; and then we heard the thunder and that was the big guns; and then we heard the rain falling and that was the blood falling; and when we came to get in the crops\, it was dead men that we reaped.” -Harriet Tubman \n\n\n\nIn five years\, Jesmyn Ward lost five young men in her life-to drugs\, accidents\, suicide\, and the bad luck that can follow people who live in poverty\, particularly black men. Dealing with these losses\, one after another\, made Jesmyn ask the question: Why? And as she began to write about the experience of living through all the dying\, she realized the truth-and it took her breath away. Her brother and her friends all died because of who they were and where they were from\, because they lived with a history of racism and economic struggle that fostered drug addiction and the dissolution of family and relationships. Jesmyn says the answer was so obvious she felt stupid for not seeing it. But it nagged at her until she knew she had to write about her community\, to write their stories and her own. \n\n\n\nJesmyn grew up in poverty in rural Mississippi. She writes powerfully about the pressures this brings\, on the men who can do no right and the women who stand in for family in a society where the men are often absent. She bravely tells her story\, revisiting the agonizing losses of her only brother and her friends. As the sole member of her family to leave home and pursue higher education\, she writes about this parallel American universe with the objectivity distance provides and the intimacy of utter familiarity. A brutal world rendered beautifully\, Jesmyn Ward’s memoir will sit comfortably alongside Edwidge Danticat’s Brother\, I’m Dying\, Tobias Wolff’s This Boy’s Life\, and Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. We look forward to seeing you there! \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nIf you purchase the audiobook through Libro.fm\, send your receipt to hello@scholarandscribe.com to be added to the club. SUMMARY:Romance Book Club: The Plight Before Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Our romance selection for December is The Plight Before Christmas by Kate Stewart. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nThe Plight Before Christmas is a full length\, second chance\, Christmas themed romance and most definitely on SANTA’S NAUGHTY LIST! \n\n\n\nClark Griswold was onto something\, at least with his annual holiday meltdown. And since the last three weeks of my life have been riddled with humbug-another breakup\, a broken toe\, an office promotion I deserved and didn’t get-I’m not at all in the mood to celebrate nor have the happ\, happ\, happiest Christmas EVER. \n\n\n\nWhen Mom insisted that we all gather at my Grandparent’s ancient cabin for an old school family Christmas\, I fully intended to get into the holiday spirit with the help of the three wise men\, Johnnie Walker\, Jack Daniels\, and Jim Beam. But those boys did absolutely nothing to offset the shock or temper the sting of seeing my EX on our doorstep the first day of our holiday soiree. \n\n\n\nApparently\, Santa missed the memo\, and this elf is pissed. \n\n\n\nStuck for a week with the man who obliterated my heart nearly two decades ago\, I did the only thing I could do and put on my game face\, thankful for the home advantage. \n\n\n\nI knew better than to drink that last cup of eggnog. \n\n\n\nI knew better than to get tongue tangled beneath the mistletoe with the only man to ever break my heart. \n\n\n\nI knew better than to sleep with Satan’s wingman on the eve of the Lord’s birthday. \n\n\n\nI could blame the nog. I could blame the deceitful light blue eyes\, thick\, angelic hair\, and panty evaporating smirk…but mostly\, I blame Eli because he always knew exactly which of my buttons to push. \n\n\n\nI foolishly thought a family Christmas filled with nostalgia was going to turn my inner Scrooge around\, but this year’s festivities went up in flames. Leave it to the ghost of my Christmas past to be the one to light the match. \n\n\n\nFa la la la la\, la FML. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. SUMMARY:Fiction Book Club: Amity
DESCRIPTION:Our fiction selection for December is Amity by Nathan Harris. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nFrom the New York Times bestselling author of The Sweetness of Water comes a gripping story about a brother and sister\, emancipated from slavery but still searching for true freedom\, and their odyssey across the deserts of Mexico to escape a former master still intent on their bondage. \n\n\n\nNew Orleans\, 1866. The Civil War might be over\, but formerly enslaved Coleman and June have yet to find the freedom they’ve been promised. Two years ago\, the siblings were separated when their old master\, Mr. Harper\, took June away to Mexico\, where he hoped to escape the new reality of the postbellum South. Coleman stayed behind in Louisiana to serve the Harper family\, clinging to the hope that one day June would return. \n\n\n\nWhen an unexpected letter from Mr. Harper arrives\, summoning Coleman to Mexico\, Coleman thinks that finally his prayers have been answered. What Coleman cannot know is the tangled truth of June’s tribulations under Mr. Harper out on the frontier. And when disaster strikes Coleman’s journey\, he is forced on the run with Mr. Harper’s daughter\, Florence. Together\, they venture into the Mexican desert to find June\, all the while evading two crooked brothers who’ll stop at nothing to capture Coleman and Florence and collect the money they’re owed. As Coleman and June separately navigate a perilous\, parched landscape\, the siblings learn quickly that freedom isn’t always given–sometimes\, it must be taken by force. \n\n\n\nAs in his New York Times bestselling debut The Sweetness of Water\, Nathan Harris delves into the critical years of the Civil War’s aftermath to deliver an intimate and epic tale of what freedom means in a society still determined to return its Black citizens to bondage. Populated with unforgettable characters\, Amity is a vital addition to the literature of emancipation. SUMMARY:Author Event: Lisa James
DESCRIPTION:About the Author\n\n\n\nLisa James is a Northern native living in the South\, a poet and author\, devoted mother\, and survivor whose journey shapes her work. She is a millennial small business owner and PMI-certified business consultant passionate about youth development\, social advocacy\, and creating meaningful impact through purpose-driven leadership. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nAt the start of a worldwide pandemic; a tragic car accident changed my life forever. This is the story of how God’s grace brought me through survivor’s guilt\, spinal surgery\, and divorce during unprecedented chaos. While I struggled to cope with the passing of the other driver; I fought to keep my dignity\, faith\, and strength intact. The trauma of unsaid accusations and investigations was a source of daily pain and fear. I didn’t feel like I had the right to complain because I had walked away with my life. The first surgery of my life took place on election day in 2020. With all the threats of violence and political division\, there could not have been a scarier time to close my eyes to the world and trust that I would wake back up. \n\n\n\nBefore and after the surgery; I had tremendous doubts about my physical healing. God’s grace sustained my mental well-being\, which resulted in overall healing. As I struggled to complete a graduates degree and home school teenage twins; my oldest child became a mother. There was nothing ordinary about my first grandchild’s birth. In fact\, a lot went wrong while I sat patiently on the sidelines begging God to “tag me in”. \n\n\n\nAs I learned to trust HIM more and more\, I found solace in HIS grace. I found hidden treasures in peaceful places. This story is for the person that seemingly lost everything and everyone\, all at once. Only; they held on long enough to experience GOD’s grace. Each morning that they GOD up\, and put one foot in front of the other\, they saw more and more to be thankful for. They never ever gave up. Even when it hurt so bad\, they would question what it actually meant to be a survivor. \n\n\n\nThis story is about understanding and receiving GOD’s grace. It’s about its perfect timing. It’s about letting go and letting GOD. It’s about leaning not on your own understanding. This story is therapy and GOD’s way of letting me feel what I needed to feel\, in order to close those gaping wounds. I’ve never cried so deeply or felt such gripping fear. I’ve also never felt such joy and restoration. \n\n\n\nThis is not a religious book; it’s about faith. It’s about a knowing that only GOD’s child can cultivate and receive. This story starts out being about a failure to yield but ends with love that knows no bounds.

DESCRIPTION:Our fantasy selection for January is The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nTwo warriors shepherd an ancient god across a broken land to end the tyrannical reign of a royal family in this epic fantasy from the author of The Vanished Birds. \n\n\n\nThe people suffer under the centuries-long rule of the Moon Throne. The royal family—the despotic emperor and his monstrous sons\, the Three Terrors—hold the countryside in their choking grip. They bleed the land and oppress the citizens with the frightful powers they inherited from the god locked under their palace. \n\n\n\nBut that god cannot be contained forever. \n\n\n\nWith the aid of Jun\, a guard broken by his guilt-stricken past\, and Keema\, an outcast fighting for his future\, the god escapes from her royal captivity and flees from her own children\, the triplet Terrors who would drag her back to her unholy prison. And so it is that she embarks with her young companions on a five-day pilgrimage in search of freedom—and a way to end the Moon Throne forever. The journey ahead will be more dangerous than any of them could have imagined. \n\n\n\nBoth a sweeping adventure story and an intimate exploration of identity\, legacy\, and belonging\, The Spear Cuts Through Water is an ambitious and profound saga that will transport and transform you—and is like nothing you’ve ever read before. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. SUMMARY:Mystery Book Club: Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers
DESCRIPTION:Our mystery selection for January is Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto. If you haven’t already\, please complete the form and be sure to purchase your copy at Scholar & Scribe to read beforehand…and get 10% off when you do! \n\n\n\nA lonely shopkeeper takes it upon herself to solve a murder in the most peculiar way in this captivating mystery by Jesse Q. Sutanto\, bestselling author of Dial A for Aunties. \n\n\n\nVera Wong is a lonely little old lady—ah\, lady of a certain age—who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite living alone\, Vera is not needy\, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to. \n\n\n\nThen one morning\, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing—a dead man in the middle of her tea shop. In his outstretched hand\, a flash drive. Vera doesn’t know what comes over her\, but after calling the cops like any good citizen would\, she sort of . . . swipes the flash drive from the body and tucks it safely into the pocket of her apron. Why? Because Vera is sure she would do a better job than the police possibly could\, because nobody sniffs out a wrongdoing quite like a suspicious Chinese mother with time on her hands. Vera knows the killer will be back for the flash drive; all she has to do is watch the increasing number of customers at her shop and figure out which one among them is the killer. \n\n\n\nWhat Vera does not expect is to form friendships with her customers and start to care for each and every one of them. As a protective mother hen\, will she end up having to give one of her newfound chicks to the police? \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and connect with fellow book lovers. We look forward to seeing you there! \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nIf you purchase the audiobook through Libro.fm\, send your receipt to hello@scholarandscribe.com to be added to the club.
